Reconstruction

Just outside the museumvillage Orvelte stands a reconstruction of an ironage farmhouse as found near Hijken. The farmhouse was originally build by mister de Haas, who was now responsible fot the reconstuction work.

The farmhouse

After about 25 years the farmhouse really needed to be restored, wich seported the theory that every generation had to build it's own house. fot it seems to have a livespan of about 25/30 years.

The roof

The reedcovering on the roof for example had to be completely renewed. A good number of byfrost members helped to do this.

The entrance

So now the entrance of the farm is all neat and trimmed so to speak but not after many volenteers have helped on this project.

Interior

Beams have been replaced although not all needed to be replaced. The roof was replaced and some of the walls were redone.

The beams

Inside the farmhouse you can find different ways to secure things Like the top of the standing oak to the picture. The beam rests on top of the oak in a very save and secure way.

Rope

Some of the ropes used during the original building of the farmhouse were in good condition after a good 25 years and have been recycled during the restauration.

Loam

Ronald and Blue healso helped to repair and replace some of the loamwalls. Blue is particularly proud on this piece of wall she worked on.

Loampit

Fortunaltly there is a loampite right next to the farmhouse. Very conviniant when needing large amounts of loam.

Spieker

Next to the farmhouse there are two 'spiekers' (Dutch name), a type of grainstorage. Here the larger one bur before restauration.

Small 'spieker'

The smaller 'spieker' was first to be restaured and here you see the endresult. The shape of the legs insure that mice can't climb in and eat the grain.

View

On one side the farmhouse borders on a small forest. But on the other side of the framhouse you have a beautifull view over the fields. What could you want?

The future

After some sacrafice (mead) and adding a protective rune we hope the farmhouse will last another 25 years at least.
